Dyslexia Awareness Week

This week is Dyslexia awareness week.

10% of the population are thought to be dyslexic, yet the British Dyslexia Association estimate that 80% of students with dyslexia leave school undiagnosed.

Dyslexia is part of neurodiversity which affects information processing. This affects reading and writing, which is what most people tend to think of about dyslexia.

However, it is important to recognise that dyslexia can also impact individual’s processing/remembering of information, organisational skills and their ability to learn new literacy skills too.

There is a wealth of information on the British Dyslexia Association website and on various social media pages. Here are some Instagram pages to follow:

Dyslexia can have a significant impact on individual’s education, work and in day-to-day life. It is a lifelong condition that can run in families. There are also some strengths associated with dyslexia, such as in reasoning, visual and creative fields.

Let’s make sure that our family, friends and colleagues with dyslexia feel supported all year round, not just on Dyslexia awareness week.
